Revealing : Hubert de Givenchy

Inspired in a post I wrote weeks ago ( revealing madame grès ) I decided to write weekly a profile about a different fashion designer. Well, I think it will be a great opportunity for you and for me to learn much more about the designers that influenced and continue to influence our liver, to learn more about the past, the present, and of course, about the future in fashion.
Today I’ll unveil the life of Hubert de Givenchy, but I would like to know your opinion as well,

Of course you know the house of Givenchy, but how much do know about its founder Hubert de Givenchy??
Hubert born on February 21 in Beauvais, France and  stills alive. Givenchy is a fashion designer and a aristocrat as well, he is the COUNT Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy.


He was brought up by his grandfather, an artist and expert tapestry, and at the age of 17, he left his hometown for Paris.

During 1945 he design for the couturier Jacques Fath as an apprentice while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts. Later, in 1946, he designed for Robert Piquet and Lucien Lelong. Then, in the next year he started working with the great Elsa Schiaparelli, whom he left only in 1951. In 1952 he opens his own maison and launches “separates”, light skirts and puff-sleeved blouses  made from raw cotton .



Suddenly, Givenchy was a new synonym for chic, and his style spread to Europe, then to the whole World.Two years latter he was the first major designer to launch a luxury ready-to-wear line,”Givenchy Université”. And in 1953 one of his designs was featured on the cover of Life Magazine.



1953 was specially an incredible year for Hubert de  Givenchy.  In 1953 he met his idol Cristóbal Balenciaga, and soon they became friends.
Later this year he receive Miss Hepburn at his atelier, and who he thought would be Katherine was  actually Audrey, his muse.  Givenchy designed the costumes for Audrey’s movie “Sabrina” which would be launched in the next year. Their relationship lasted until her death in 1993, and she became an ambassador of the designer. He created many clothes for her, including for 9 other films she starred, such as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s ” and “Funny Face”.

In 1957 Givenchy use Audrey to promote his first perfume, “L’interdit” . And in 1973 his supreme elegance could be wore by men as well, as he launched his first menswear collection.
In 1988 he sold his maison to the Bernard Arnault of the LVMH group and in 1995 he retired, being succeeded by John  Galliano, Alexander McQueen,  Julien McDonald, Ozwald Boateng and finally Riccardo Tisci.


Givenchy had his designs wore by numerous other renowned women as: Jacqueline Kennedy,  Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Maria Callas, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Diana Vreeland and Wallis Simpson.
