Bye Oscar Niemeyer!

At 104 years, the architect Oscar Niemeyer died today (12/05/2012) in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. A major figure in Brazilian  and world architecture that went in peace, leaving fearless and audacious works that so much inspire architects, artists, designers from around the world.

Prized ( he even has won the Pritzker), much criticized, much-loved, Niemeyer has achieved what many architects dream of making: creating an unique architectural identity and build an entire city from nothing (Brasilia).

How to define and talk about his work? So many individual feelings , so many interpretations, I know that usually I do not hesitate to write about works of artists, but today I’ll let the artist explain himself in his own way:

‘When I do lectures for students, say that architecture is not important, what is important is the life!’ Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012)
